A guide for beginners
Modern money problems need modern money solutions, like affiliate marketing. One of the best things about affiliate marketing is that you need almost no money to get started.
This business model is a known money-maker, and it needs very little to get up and running. All you need is a phone or a laptop and an internet connection, and you're set to get the ball rolling.
It's also a low-risk, flexible business that can become your main income if you do it right.
As with everything, it takes work and consistency. It's not a get-rich-quick scheme.
Let's get into it.
How does affiliate marketing work?
Affiliate marketing means you promote someone else's product or service. If your promotion results in a direct sale, you get a commission. As an affiliate, you usually have a link that tracks whether the customer came from your following. This is called an affiliate link.
The link keeps the business model fair. It records the sale, and it makes sure you get the commission you earned.
The whole process is a simple cycle with three parties:

- The affiliate (you) - the promoter and referrer of products or services
- The customer (a follower) - someone who follows you online and makes a purchase using your link
- The merchant (the creator) - the person or organisation that sells the product or service and created the affiliate programme
You only get a commission if a sale comes directly from your link.
For example, if you promote a new pair of reading glasses and someone buys them in a shop after you told them about it, you won't get any commission. So make sure your affiliate link is always easy for your followers to find.
As you'd expect, not all affiliate programmes are the same. The rewards differ from programme to programme, and they can change over time. Some programmes also pay out for repeat customers.
These are some of the rewards you can usually expect from an affiliate programme:
- Cash commission (a fixed amount or a percentage)
- Free products or services
- Experiences related to the product or service
As with everything, there are pros and cons. Let's take a look at both.
What are the pros of affiliate marketing?
For something to be a good business idea, it needs more pros than cons, and the pros need to matter more. Fortunately, that's the case with affiliate marketing.
1. Low or zero-cost business idea
One of the biggest draws of affiliate marketing is that you can do it without spending a pound.
All you need is a platform where you publish content. This can be a social media account or a website. A website has some small costs, but nothing that breaks the bank: your domain name and your hosting fees.
If you choose the website route, take a look at our web hosting plans. Our guide to what web hosting is explains the basics.
Whatever you choose, as long as you bring a steady stream of traffic, your affiliate link works for you.
2. Your audience in Egypt is already online
Most people in Egypt already use the internet, and many of them use social media. That gives an affiliate a big audience to reach.
- Egypt had 98.2 million internet users, or 82.7% of the population, at the end of 2025 (DataReportal, Digital 2026: Egypt).
- Egypt had 51.6 million social media user identities, or 43.4% of the population (same source).
These figures don't promise sales. They show that your future followers are already on the platforms where you can reach them.
3. You don't need to be a marketing expert
You don't need a degree or a diploma to get started with affiliate marketing. It helps, but it's definitely not required.
The most successful affiliate marketers find their sweet spot by being honest about the product and about themselves. When you share your real experience of a product or service, that is marketing.
You can improve your odds by learning some key marketing skills. Mostly, though, people will be guided by your honest experience.
4. A mobile and convenient second source of income
You can manage your affiliate marketing from anywhere, whether you live in Cairo or a small town. That also means you can earn money from anywhere. You won't be tied to one place (unless you're promoting sun cream, in which case a sunny spot helps).
It also means you don't have to leave your current job. A little extra time and effort on social media or your website gets it up and running. Once it has traction, regular upkeep can turn it into a kind of passive income.
What are the cons of affiliate marketing?
There are some downsides to affiliate marketing as well.
1. Competition can be everywhere
The same reasons that got you started can work for someone else too. Because the barrier to entry is low, the niche you choose may already have many other affiliates.
Some of them may work at it full time or have expert knowledge of the field. That makes things more competitive. Persistence and hard work will still put you ahead of many of your competitors.
2. You don't control the reward
As an affiliate, you have no control over the rules or rewards that the merchant sets. You can follow them, and you can suggest changes once you have a large enough following.
You also can't fix the product if its quality suddenly drops. That means you could end up promoting something you don't believe in.
3. You build someone else's business
Instead of using your platform to build your own business, you build someone else's. This isn't always a bad thing, but your reputation creates trust in another company's product or service. You could use that same reputation to build your own business.
People may still trust your word, but that customer could have become a repeat client of yours.
How to start affiliate marketing for free
As we said, you don't need money to get started with affiliate marketing. But a small spend on a domain and a website certainly helps things along.
The free route has a catch. You need to keep growing your following and keep networking, because the business model depends on you bringing new customers to the merchant.
You also need to know the basics of marketing. In a nutshell: what can you do to lead a customer to buy? If you aren't sure, there are plenty of resources online that give a good introduction to marketing.
If you don't market yourself well or grow your following, you'll quickly run into problems.
You usually won't earn from repeat customers. Once customers buy through your link, they'll likely go straight to the merchant's site next time. No affiliate link means no commission for you.
With that in mind, we strongly recommend a website. Website content can have a much bigger impact and stay useful for years. More importantly, it won't get lost in people's feeds after a few days, along with your link. It's also a lot more scalable.
Your best bet is a website plus social media. The steps below work for both.
Check how a programme pays you
Before you join any programme, read its payout terms. Check how it pays, the minimum payout and any fees, and make sure you can receive the payment in Egypt.
Find your niche and affiliate marketing programme
The first thing to do before you become an affiliate is choose a niche. Start with the low-hanging fruit and go for a niche that already interests you.
That way, you work on something you already enjoy, and any extra effort you put in also feeds your interest.
Don't cast a wide net, because your authority across many niches will be low. For instance, if people know you as an outdoors person, they won't look to you for IT recommendations.
This step matters, because you'll build your brand in that niche over time. So choose a subject you know you'll still be passionate about in the future.
If you're unsure what to choose, look at a long list of niches. It can help you narrow it down, and you might find one that didn't come to you at first.
Some of the popular niches include:
- Lifestyle
- Hobbies
- Tech and IT
- Finance
- Health and fitness
- Beauty
These broad niches are very competitive. Your chances of success are higher if you narrow it down further. Here are some examples of niches within the broader ones:
- Clothing
- Gardening
- Hardware
- Investing
- Cycling
- Natural skincare
You can narrow it down even further.
In general, stay away from "get-rich-quick" programmes. You also shouldn't pay to become an affiliate.
Choose the right traffic channel
Once you've settled on a niche, decide which traffic channel suits you best as an affiliate.
You'll need to know the channel well. Ask questions like these:
- What is the channel's main format?
- What type of people usually use this channel?
- Can I create content for this channel reliably?
- What is the channel mainly used for?
These questions get you started. For example, if your niche is wildlife photography, a visual channel like Instagram works well. Choose a channel where your audience will engage with you.
That means researching each channel or platform. You wouldn't sell fizzy, sugary drinks at an elite training centre. In the same way, you want a platform that suits:
- What you're trying to sell
- The type of content you create
- The type of engagement you want to have
Once you've done your research, settle on the best choice and commit to it.
Choose only one, or at most two, traffic channels for your affiliate links.
More than that spreads you too thin. If you're already active on a channel, start there. If you want to be on more channels, use them to support your main one or two.
Also invest some time in SEO (search engine optimisation). Good SEO raises the chance that people see your posts and content. The more people see your content, the more often your affiliate link may get clicked.
Where audiences in Egypt spend their time
DataReportal gives the advertising reach of each platform in Egypt in late 2025 (Digital 2026: Egypt):
| Platform | Ad reach in Egypt |
|---|---|
| 51.6 million | |
| YouTube | 49.3 million |
| TikTok | 48.8 million (aged 18 and over) |
| Messenger | 37.0 million |
| 21.7 million | |
| Snapchat | 20.6 million |
| 15.0 million members | |
| X | 4.64 million |
Search matters too. Google held 96.41% of the search engine market in Egypt in September 2026 (StatCounter).
Some good free platforms to think about are:
- YouTube
- TikTok
- Google (or, more precisely, your website)
Each of these has a different audience. Research which platform suits your niche best.
Google and YouTube are harder to rank well on. The payoff, however, can be traffic to your content for years to come.
LinkedIn has a more professional audience, so a niche built around work and careers does well there. These are simple examples of what to weigh when you choose.
Whatever traffic channel you pick for your affiliate programme, you'll need great content. That's non-negotiable.
Create great content that builds trust
Whatever platform you go for, find a good balance between content that entertains and content that informs. Depending on the platform, the balance can tip either way.
For example, content on TikTok will probably lean towards entertainment. Content on LinkedIn will likely be more informative. Whichever you choose, your content absolutely must be great.
Half-hearted content that looks like everything else puts you in the same pool as everyone else.
Your goal is a trustworthy brand for yourself. People should consume your content and trust what you say. If people don't trust or respect what you're saying, why would they click on your affiliate link?
After all, your affiliate link is a recommendation for a product or service.
Arabic is the official language of Egypt (Constitution of 2014, article 2), so decide early which language your audience reads, and whether your content needs an Arabic version.
Some other things you can do to make your content resonate with your readers:
- Understand your audience
- Know your audience's pain points and preferences
- Check out the competition and see where you can improve or do something different
- Be patient and honest
You can also create extra content in advance. Life happens, and some days you'll be more motivated than others. With content ready, a slow day doesn't break your schedule.
Even with nothing prepared, push through when you lack motivation. Consistency is the name of the game, so do your best to publish your best work on schedule.
Go all out on promotion
Your great content and SEO work take time to snowball. Help them along by spreading the word about your content.
Create awareness for your content in as many places as you can. This is where your other social media accounts and traffic channels come into play.
Use them to share and boost the content on your main traffic channel. But don't just use those other accounts to share your content. Take part in forums and discussions where you can.
React to other people's posts and build relationships. You want to be known as an active part of your niche community, and the only way to do that is to be active in it. This is a solid way to build your reputation within a niche.
What you don't want to do is spam people with your affiliate link or your content on their posts. Be sincere in your interactions. Nobody will trust or respect you if you drop your affiliate link into every discussion.
Reinvest in yourself and scale your affiliate business
When your following feels big enough, put more effort into your affiliate programmes. It may have taken a while to get there, but you earned your reputation.
With that reputation comes the power to influence what people buy. Now is the time to scale your affiliate business. Get someone to help with content creation, or an assistant to help run things.
Software or apps that streamline your work also help you scale. For example, if your main traffic channel is Instagram, you could get some photo editing software.
That raises the quality of your content, and you learn a new skill too. Another option is a couple of online courses. There's a wealth of experts and information out there. If you have a chance to learn, take it.
The HostAfrica affiliate programme
Here at HostAfrica, we also run an affiliate programme. It's free to join. These are the terms that our affiliate programme page shows:
- A $27.00 signup bonus when you join
- A 5% commission on each referred sale, recurring for the lifetime of the referred service
- A 2% commission on Dedicated Servers
- Payouts once your account reaches a minimum credit of $54.00
When you request a withdrawal, you choose a payment straight to your bank account or a credit to your HostAfrica client account.
That means the more referrals you make, the more recurring income you can earn. Check out all the details on our affiliate programme page.
Wrapping up
Affiliate marketing can be an excellent way to make some extra money in Egypt.
Yes, you can start without spending a pound. But a small budget for a domain and hosting makes it easier.
The main question is whether you're willing to put in the time and effort to make it work. As we said, it's not a get-rich-quick scheme. Like a plant, it needs water every day (or every other day).
That means great content in the language of your audience, and a brand that people trust. Then you use your reputation to promote your affiliate link, and you scale from there.
With this structure, consistency and a positive outlook, you can definitely make it as an affiliate marketer!
